The O'Neill Cemetery was established in the early 1800's by early settlers of the city and this area. It is situated on approximately 11 acres of land in the far northwestern part of the city.
One whom has not visited the cemetery for some time may not recognize most of it, due to the removal of most of the dead and dying elm trees surrounding the outside of the cemetery. When these trees were removed, many young evergreens and ash trees were planted to replace them.
Although many of the dead trees were removed in the oldest part of the cemetery (the far north section), many old Red Cedar trees still stand. These cedar trees were brought from the Niobrara river about 25 miles to the north of the city, to be planted at the cemetery when it was first established.
